When he arrived in Pittsburgh for a brief stint during the 2014-15 season, he never passed the puck. Rarely have we seen a player who so consistently improves on an almost annual basis. Here are his goal per game totals, while we’re at it: Yes, Guentzel makes $6 million a year, compared to Rakell’s $5 million and Zucker’s $5.5 million but he’s still performing at a much higher level than the two.įor reference Guentzel is currently on pace for 37.27 goals (77.03 points) across 82 games. These are Rust’s point per game totals, starting with his rookie season:

It just doesn’t make sense to me how Guentzel can be having a bad season while those two are having really good seasons. So even if they continued at their pace and Guentzel remained off the score sheet, they’d get close in goals but wouldn’t catch him in points.

Rakell is currently on pace for 29.28 goals (58.57 points) across 82 games He’s currently now on pace for 30.28 goals (52.98 points) across 82 games. If the players should be playing more physical then yes, that is on the coach, if not, then it's up to the GM to find them.Įveryone in this sub brings up Rakell and Zucker all the time, yet bash Guentzel who has been producing better than those two.īefore Zucker’s 9 goals in 8 games, he was on pace for 22.77 goals in 82 games (50.11 points). Otherwise, our team is slow and can't keep up with fast, hard hitting, grindy teams and that's just how this team has been built, point your fingers where they belong, it's not the coaches fault nor the players to that end. Obvs Dumo isn't because our team is cursed and this year the hockey gods decided to take out our D men instead of the forwards. Reminds me a lil of Subban's slew foot thing, it's like a tick he can't knock.Īnyways, if Carter is getting limited ice, Dumoulin, Rust should also be getting less reps rn especially if he is in fact playing injured or sore. cutting to the front of the net on a 1v1 just to get stuffed everytime. Rust has his gimmicks that are starting to wear off as he is not able to physically do them anymore I.e. Whether it's contract, injury, being a new father, he looks very slow, a lot of the corps does, hell Jake is trying but he gets pushed around so easily, same with POJ sometimes.

This is ironic because it was Rust if I'm not mistaken being swapped on different lines to make them better only a couple years ago. Rakell has effectively been a better Rust and you can see that as they keep swapping him on the top two lines, funnily enough with Rust, but it's Rakell being added to the other line to help that line, not Rust. He is still playing the right way, just gripping the stick too tight and probably not sleeping quite enough at the moment. But he had 7 points in 10 in February, which isn't earthshattering but it's okay production for him, and a kid in early March. Rust is in a rough patch, and sure in the coming seasons as he ages those patches might get longer. This sub loves Zucker (rightly) for his effort and currently his production, but remember that he had 7 and 8 game goalless streaks this year. His forecheck, and backcheck, and being a general bother creating board battles where there weren't board battles to be had, all still seem to be there by my (perhaps rose colored) eye test, and last night he was shooting when he had lanes and trying to make something happen. His hands have been more trash than usual recently and because of that he shouldn't be on PP1 or maybe even PP2, but production and effort aren't always the same. I'm biased towards Rust for a couple reasons (as a student I watched him play at ND), but don't think he's apathetic to the team right now.
